“I like it how the teachers are friendly and always willing to help.  I enjoy going on the camps and there are always new and exciting things to do.  Carncot has good sports and the hockey team is great fun. It was good that so many of us got into the rep teams for hockey.”

Writing Honours

Last term, we reported on taking a group of our girls to Speed Date an Author and on the subsequent challenge of writing a 500 word story with six prescribed words – fossicking, effusive, chasm, steal, pomegranate and creep – given to the girls by the six authors.

Earlier this week, Mrs Watson received an email from the NZ Book Council telling us that Lydia Whyte had won with her story Blitz Thief, printed here for you to enjoy.  The Council wrote, “We were impressed that such a well-rounded story could come from such a young girl. She is very talented.”   That same afternoon, Lydia received a letter from the Penguin Group to say that she was one of eight finalists chosen from 500 entries in the inaugural Puffin Short Story competition with her story, Puffi.  The winner will be chosen later this month at a ceremony in Auckland. We have our fingers crossed for you, Lydia.

Carncot Science Fair

By Amelia, Science Leader

On Tuesday 10 August, we hosted six scientists who came to judge the Carncot Science Fair Competition 2010.  The quality projects the Year 7 and 8 students presented included a variety of topics, from pasta sauces to water content in soil.  The judges commented on the strength of the technology assignments, particularly the top three winners.

In third place with her project, Amore Pomidore was Caitlin, Louisa's Bikesmart Backpack came runner up and Emm's exciting innovation for sick cows called Thermooo Wrap was juged over all winner.

We are very grateful to the wonderful scientists who generously gave their time to encourage and support our aspiring scientists.  We are now looking forward to the challenge of the Manawatu Science and Technology Fair to be held at the Leisure Centre on 27-29 August.

New Zealand Writers' Workshop

One of the highlights last term was the opportunity for five students to attend a Speed Date an Author writing workshop run by the New Zealand Book  Council.  This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to meet and work with five of New Zeaalnd's top children's authors, David Hill, Janice Marriott, Fleur Beale, Fifi Colston and Diana Neild.  Each author spoke to five groups of ten students for twenty minutes about a key aspect of writing.

Information and Communication Technology

Information Communication Technology (ICT) plays a major role in the lives of our young people. E-learning, facilitated through ICT, has considerable potential to enhance learning when used safely and securely. Safe computer and Internet use is a priority at Carncot.  All staff and students, or their parents where they are younger, sign an Internet and computer safety agreement each year.

The Tongaririo Crossing

senior camp sml

The dawn’s grey light made me even more tired. The orange glow of the sun’s awakening shone through the blue hills showing the shrubs that lay low on them. We began the walk apprehensive and nervous but we kept going. After 3km, I was tired and sore already but the pristine crystal clear views of the mighty mountains were enough to keep me going.
